The Oncoming Storm, the first book in the Angel in the Whirlwind series by Christopher Nuttall was riveting. I was entranced from the first page I read and had a hard time placing the book down. I love Sci-Fi and the best science fiction also has an element readers can relate to. In Oncoming Storm, events in the novel were chillingly parallel to today in many ways. There are two factions, the Commonwealth and the Theocracy contesting claim to an area of space. As an uneasy standoff looms, newly appointed naval Captain Kat Falcone finds herself stepping in to the proverbial mine field.
Kat is a girl who was born to privilege. Silver spoon and all, at least until she makes the choice to enlist in the naval academy. It is there that she feels she earns her place, a place she deserved and was not just given to her because of her family name… at least until her father interfered, granting her command of the newest starship in the fleet and dispatching her to Cadiz. Cadiz is a place in unease and it will be Kat’s job to figure out the cause. The answer to this question and others will prove to be an exciting ride for readers. I look forward to reading the next book in the series, Falcone Strike. But until then must say this is some of the best story-telling I’ve had the pleasure of reviewing, as a result I am giving The Oncoming Storm 5 lightening bolts out of 5.
I received this book for free from the publisher through NetGalley.
