I had a thought today while doing a sort of devotional and then thinking back over a conversation we had in Sabbath school a few weeks back. We talked about the ‘Rich Young Ruler’ and how he felt he was doing everything but when Jesus challenged him to give up all he had, he walked away sadly.
Perhaps our challenge today is not with wealth, but maybe it is with perfection. So often we get wrapped up in this idea that we have to be perfect first before we can follow Jesus. But that’s just one of the devil’s favorite lies. The idea that we can earn our way in to Heaven of our own merits.
Trying and ultimately failing to be perfect does not an abundant life make. As a recovering perfectionist, I can tell you it’s a very empty feeling always trying to be the best. It’s a never ending race that is nearly impossible to measure up to. Whenever you make one goal, another one is always out there. With Jesus though, our life is different. He calls us to live wholeheartedly, and the great news is, we do not have to do it alone. In fact, Jesus is with us every step of the way.
Once we admit we need a Savior and accept that even though we are imperfect He loved us enough to die on the cross for us…well that’s the beginning of wholehearted living. Moving from a feeling of Not _____ Enough and transforming into a rock solid belief that you are a Son/Daughter of God and because of that you are more than enough.
