Sleeping Beauty by Disney is probably one of my all time favorite fairy tale stories. So when I saw there was a new book out there by Katie Hamstead called Princess of Tyrone, the first book in the Fairy Tale Galaxy Chronicles I was naturally very excited. If you are looking to find a fresh retelling of a classic story, Katie Hamstead accomplishes that in Princess of Tyrone.
In this book, sleeping beauty, in the form of Apolline is no damsel in distress. She’s tough, and independent. Able to protect herself. As a woman, this greatly appeals to me. The notion that all princesses are damsels in distress awaiting rescue gets old really fast. In Apolline, we have a princess that is capable in the hunting animals and using a pistol. In fact, when she meets Prince Allard she has to rescue him several times!
The dynamic between Apolline and Allard is a breath of fresh air. It is one of those sweet friendships where both parties are clearly attracted to one another but yet they know they cannot show it due to duty and prior attachments. Both Apolline and Allard have their whole life mapped out for them. Apolline’s fate is to marry an unknown suitor around her 21st birthday. Meanwhile Allard is set to marry the hidden Princess of Tyrone. As sparks fly and they struggle to maintain a friendship with one another despite a growing attraction, it is funny for the reader to watch knowing that they are intended for one another. Outside of Apolline and Allard, the rest of the characters as well are easy to relate to, if albeit a bit underdeveloped at times.
If you are looking for a fairy tale that also dabbles in science fiction, this is the book for you. It is an easy read that I had a hard time placing down. The only reason I did not give this book 5 stars was due to the rushed nature of the ending. Either way, Princess of Tyrone book is well deserving of a solid 4/5 stars for a splendid addition to the increasing trend of re-imagined fairy tale stories.
I received this book for free from the Publisher through NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
