Nemesis by Anna Banks was absolutely AMAZING! I had a hard time putting it down, and if you enjoy fantasy novels set in a Prince of Persisa / Ancient Egypt style time, this is most definitely the book for you! Nemesis is the story of Sepora, a Serubelan princess and the last known forger of spectorium. In order to prevent a war that could destroy the world as she knows it, Sepora flees the rolling fields of Serubel for the rival kingdom of Theoria a desert wasteland. Faking her death, Sepora runs from her father, refusing to be a pawn in his power games to control the world and conquer Theoria. Intending to hide among the lower classes in Theoria, her plan goes awry as she is captured and sold to the palace harem. Will she be able to escape and hide her spectorium forging powers as she is brought into the palace of her father’s rival? Or will this King too attempt to use her for his own greedy purposes?
Our other main protagonist is Tarik, crown prince forced to ascend to the throne after his father catches a rare plague and dies. When Sepora comes in to the palace, Tarik’s whole life is turned upside down. With this outbreak underway, and doctors confirming that spectorium is the only way to provide temporary relief and potentially cure the plague, the situation is dire. Unfortunately, Serubel is no longer trading spectorium because their only forger, Sepora, has fled. Which leaves Theoria with a dire choice, declare war or die?
All in all, I cannot say enough good things about this book. We have a strong female lead in Sepora and an equally strong male lead in Tarik. Despite a rocky start to their relationship with one another, they grow quite close and I am eagerly anticipating the next book in this series. If you enjoy adventure and a strong female heroine, this is the book for you. I’d give it 10/5 stars if I could, but will settle for 5/5 stars for an engaging storyline that kept me hooked from start to finish.
I received this book for free from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
