Slender Reeds: Jochebed’s Hope by Texie Susan Gregory was a good book that showed a different perspective to the classic Moses story. Have you ever wondered how Jochebed’s life may have been? How she found Amram? Life in the Hebrew village? Her role as a slave? Well, search no more, in Slender Reeds, we are given insight into Jochebed, her friend Shiphrah, and her mother as well.
All in all, this was a solid retelling. My heart ached for both Shiphrah and Jochebed at certain times in the story. Biblical Fiction is one of my favorite genre’s and this does not disappoint. If you enjoy the story of Moses and have always wanted to have more perspective, you will enjoy this story as Gregory gives us a fresh perspective to Jochebed and Moses. This book is good for 8th graders and above as there are some concepts that are better for older readers. For a good story and a fresh retelling, I am giving Slender Reeds: Jochebed’s Hope 4/5 stars. I would have given it a full 5/5 stars if not for a few disjointed transitions between scenes and chapters. At times I thought it transitioned unexpectedly.
I received this book for free from the Publisher through NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
