Burning Bright, the first book in the Extraordinaries was an awesome book that captivated me from start to finish. First off, we get to have an old fashioned historical romance, and most importantly, we get a strong heroine who starts to realize her potential. Elinor Pembroke is a girl that has lived her entire life within her parents condescending control, a disappointment. All of that changes when she is discovered to be a prodigious scorcher. Suddenly her overbearing father no longer ignores her, after all, he has high hopes for her potential suitors, seeking to use her marriage to garner an advantageous situation for himself. Elinor rebels against that plan and enrolls in the royal navy. While in the Navy, Elinor not only earns the response of the crew, but also of Captain Miles Ramsay, a handsome extraordinary himself, who is able to fly.
I really enjoyed seeing history through an extraordinary bent. I LOVED having a strong female lead as she began to learn her powers. She did not instantly become strong, it took time and practice with the team around her. I liked the idea of different individuals having special abilities and enjoyed learning about those abilities. If you enjoy romance and a bit of super power abilities, you will love this book. It features a great surrounding cast and rich descriptions. For this reason, I am giving it 5/5 stars for a book I had a hard time putting down.
I received this book for free from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
